One of the many reasons living in a Georgia is wonderful is because of the Autumn foliage. There are many places to watch the leaves change color in Georgia that it hard to pick which one place. After looking for new adventures in Georgia I was intrigued by the Japanese Garden at Gibbs Garden and decided to visit on a whim.
The garden was designed by Jim Gibbs and consist of 220 acres with over 24 ponds, 32 bridge crossings and 19 waterfalls. There were native azaleas, dogwoods, mountain laurels and crape myrtles, in several shades of pink, mauve, lavender, and red, are sprinkled throughout the landscape. Although I was visiting during the fall, there is still plenty to see so bring your walking shoes. The pathways are not paved but are covered with a ground granite composition, please select the right shoes. I didn’t and days later my feet are still mad at me. There is a tram services for an additional cost but because of 2020, tram services is currently suspended. I will definitely use the tram next time I visit.
The Manor House on property sit atop a small hill surrounded by a garden of rhododendron and hydrangeas. I recommend taking the short hike up the hill, especially during spring as most of the flowers have already bloomed. The trail to the Manor was a brief walk and we were delighted to find a koi fish pond along the way.
Here are a few tips if you plan on visiting Gibbs Garden this Autumn for the foliage or in the future:
- Gibbs Garden website provides updated pictures of the gardens. I recommend visiting the site before your planned visit.
- Restrooms are located at the Manor House and Welcome Center only.
- There is a small cafe on the premise.
- Outside food is not allowed in the garden but you may bring in water.
- Picnic tables are located in Parking lot 3 if you do pack a lunch.
- Photos are allowed, as well as monopods and tripods. However, staged photography is not permitted, whether personal or professional. Other professional photography equipment, such as reflectors, are also not permitted.
Gibbs Gardens holds several events throughout the year. Currently, the event is
Fall ColorFest. While exploring Gibbs Garden for the first time, I found that it was more than what I expected and as with most things I’ve experience lately, I already want to go back.
