Over the past year I have purchased at least ten books a month. I know that may not seem like a lot but that’s 120 books in a year. Do I read them all? I try to. But I am quickly acquiring a nice sized library full of books to be read. Don’t get me wrong, I am excited to read all the books but I need more focus.
I will admit that some of the books I have purchased I previously read them on kindle. I just wanted a physical hardcover copy of the book as well. Because I am purchasing so many books and trying to say money at the same time my list of 7 BEST WAY TO GET BOOKS became very helpful. The one thing I’ve learned is that you can always find used popular books in good condition.
To help me stay focus and stay on track, I’ve decided to create a monthly book recommendation list. These are books I plan to read this month, in addition to a few I’ve read and highly recommend.
OCTOBER READS
Beasts of Prey by Ayana Grey
Beasts of Prey released date was 9/28. Meaning, I have waited since May for preorder of this book to be delivered. This is why it is my first pick for my October Book List is Beasts of Prey. Being author Ayana Gray debut, Beasts of Prey has already garnered a Netflix movie deal and is also October B&N YA Book Club Pick. The book will be a trilogy and is considered Young Adult Fantasy.
According to the site synopsis the book is about where fate binds two Black teenagers together. As they strike a dangerous alliance to hunt down the ancient creature menacing their home—and discover much more than they bargained for.
Ayana is currently doing book tours both in-person and virtually. I joined a virtual event that was in conjunction with Little Shop of Stories Bookstore. It made me even more excited to read the book this month. For more information about Beast of Prey or where you can join Ayana Gray on tour visit https://www.ayanagray.com/ .
The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes
Billionaire Tobias Hawthorne leaves unknowing Avery Grambs his fortune and she has no clue as why. Simple enough, right? Well, not so much. Avery must move into the Hawthorne House with the deceased four grandsons. Now I’m intrigued.
Questions I want to know from the start are why she received the inheritance and from the book title what kind of games are they playing? And why can’t a billionaire leave me some money? Just saying. The book seems like a great mystery book and like most books these days it’s a series. The second in the book in series was The Hawthorne Legacy was just released in September.
The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner
This year I decided to try a book subscription service called Once Upon a Book Club and The Lost Apothecary is the book I received. The Lost Apothecary is about a female apothecary who secretly dispenses poisons to liberate women from the men who have wronged them. Sounds good doesn’t it. I was glad that this was my first book subscription book and I am excited to read it.
I have always wanted to try a book subscription but wasn’t sure if I would like it. Well, I liked it. The wonderful thing about Once Upon a Time is that you don’t have to commit the service. You can select an option for a one month service. Every month is a different book that comes with 3-5 gifts that relate to the book. If you would like to try the services here’s $5 off link.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND
First Grave on the Right by Darynda Jones
I’ve always been a big reader but I go through spurts. And after a year or two of not really reading this series made me want to read again. Known as the Charley Davidson novels, First Grave on the Right is a 13 book paranormal romantic thriller series.
It’s perfect for halloween season, it’s not scary but the main character can see the dead. Main character Charley Davidson is a private investigator and also the grim reaper. She is basically the portal to heaven. The reason I love this book series is because it is full of humor and suspense. They can also get a bit steamy and include a bit of romance.
Darynda Jones writing style is such a joy and brings the characters to life so well. If you have the opportunity to listen to the audiobooks, I recommend it for this series to bring even more of the character to life. Wonderful books that I plan to re-read soon.
Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz
Odd Thomas is another one of my favorite paranormal thriller book series. I was first introduce to Odd through the movie of the first book. While the movie wasn’t the best, I did enjoy it, and it peeked my interest enough to want to read the series.
Odd is a short-order cook in a small desert town. And see Odd is well Odd, he can see the dead but what’s interesting is the dead don’t talk. They do however try to communicate with Odd. Trying to occasionally help him to prevent future crimes. The story is an interesting tale and I like reading about Odd. Plus, there’s Elvis! Yes, Elvis is a character in the books.
This series is suspenseful and by the end of it you’ll come to love Odd as he is oddly wonderful. Dean Koontz is a great author with extensive catalog.
