There are restaurants that feed you, and then there are places that nourish your soul. Today, I had lunch at Souper Jenny’s North Decatur location, and I walked out feeling full in more ways than one.
It was my first visit to this location, though not my first encounter with Souper Jenny. I’ve heard friends talk about it like a well-kept secret they’re half-proud and half-protective of. “You have to try the turkey chili,” they say, or, “That cookie… you’ll dream about it.” Turns out, they were absolutely right.
First Impressions: Warmth All Around
As soon as I stepped inside, the atmosphere hit me—in the best way. The space is bright and inviting, with chalkboard menus, handwritten signs, eclectic art, and the kind of cozy vibe that makes you want to slow down. The staff greeted me like I was a friend, not just another customer. It’s rare these days to feel that kind of authenticity behind the counter.
Souper Jenny has this easy, unpretentious energy, but there’s also a clear purpose behind everything. It’s the kind of place where community, food, and wellness intersect—and you can feel it from the minute you walk in.

The Food: Honest, Wholesome, and Delicious
For lunch, I ordered the Kale Caesar Salad with Chicken and a cup of My Dad’s Turkey Chili. The salad was fresh and hearty—shredded kale tossed with creamy, garlicky dressing, crunchy croutons, and generously portioned grilled chicken. It’s the kind of salad that actually feels like a meal, not an afterthought.
And that chili? It’s famous for a reason. Rich, savory, and packed with ground turkey, beans, and veggies, it’s got just the right kick of heat. Comfort food that doesn’t leave you in a food coma.
Of course, I couldn’t leave without trying one of their chocolate chip cookies. It was everything I hoped for—gooey, just-out-of-the-oven soft, and perfectly sweet. Paired with a tall cup of their sweet tea, it made for the kind of lunch that feels like a treat without the guilt.

The Story Behind Souper Jenny
What makes this place even more special is its story. Souper Jenny was founded in 1999 by Jenny Levison, a chef, writer, and community-builder who wanted to create more than just a soup shop. Her mission was to offer healthy, seasonal food in a welcoming space—and to use that space to give back.
Over the years, Souper Jenny has grown into something truly meaningful. From that first location in Buckhead, they’ve expanded to five spots across metro Atlanta: Buckhead, Brookhaven, Westside, Roswell, and North Decatur (where I dined today). Each location maintains the same spirit—home-cooked food made with love, rotating menus based on what’s fresh and in-season, and a deep connection to the local community.

More Than a Restaurant
One of the things I love most about Souper Jenny is that they don’t just talk about community—they live it. Here’s just a sample of what they offer outside of their regular menu:
- Garden Club Tours – Learn how the food on your plate grows and meet local growers.
- Educational Lunch & Learns – Gather around for discussions about food, wellness, sustainability, and community-building.
- Gardening Classes – Perfect for anyone curious about starting their own edible garden.
- Volunteering & Interning – A great way to connect with their mission and give back.
These offerings show that Souper Jenny is about much more than quick lunches. It’s a community hub, an educational space, and a place where people come to be part of something bigger than themselves. For more information visit Souper Jenny Farm!
If you haven’t been to Souper Jenny yet, I can’t recommend it enough. Whether you’re craving something nourishing, want to meet people who care about food and community, or just need a cookie that will make your day 10x better—this is your spot.
Next time I visit, I think I’ll bring a friend and stay a little longer. Maybe I’ll even check out one of their garden classes or volunteer for the afternoon. Because at Souper Jenny, it’s not just about eating well—it’s about living well.
