I will always be intrigued with history, therefore anything that plays off of history I am going to be equally intrigued. Speakeasies are a unique part of United States history as they became popular due to alcoholic beverages being illegal. During the 20’s and early 30’s, Speakeasy bars were prominent in what is now known as the Prohibition era. The sale, manufacture, and transportation of alcoholic beverages was all illegal. Speakeasies largely disappeared after Prohibition ended but now speakeasy-style and secret bars are gaining popularity again. And they are providing some of the best decorated and themed bars you’ll ever visit with amazing cocktails with an upscale vibe.
1. 12 Cocktail Bar
After visiting Ponce City Market several times, I am not sure how I missed this place. Tucked away at the top of Ponce City Market, tis where this little-known intimate lounge is located. There are no menus but the bartenders are all you need. The bar is beautiful and the concoction they make are superb.
2. The Blind Pig Parlour Bar
Currently themed for the Christmas and renamed The Blind Elf Parlour, the Blind Pig is luxurious speakeasy with an 1920s atmosphere. Providing excellent cocktail and live music, the parlor bar is beautifully detailed. There is also offers a limited option of small bites.
3. The James Room
If you pass The James Room on the Beltline you may think that it is a small chic French patisserie/bakery or you may just walk pass it not even giving it a second thought. Well tucked behind that delicious bakery is a quaint little speakeasy. Not only are the drinks delicious but they have a small menu which include Honey Sriracha Chicken Wings and the popular Balsamic Raspberry Lamb Chops.
4. JoJo’s Beloved Cocktail Lounge
Providing a 70s vibe, JoJo’s Beloved is a well hidden lounge tucked in a corner of the new upscale food hall Politan Row. It’s an intimate lounge but with the great music of 70’s you’ll be enjoy yourself in no time. The retro, cozy booths make for a great outing for a small group of friends. It is best to make reservation for this spot as the lounge has very limited space. They do accept a small number of walk-ins nightly.
5. Red Phone Booth
This exclusive cigar bar has two locations Downtown Atlanta and a Buckhead location as well! You must enter the red phone booth and say the secret code to enter. If you don’t have access to the code you can always get a membership to get in. The Red Phone Booth has two ways you can get in, an annual membership or you can simply just know a member. If you’re hungry, they also have a pretty extensive menu that includes fresh seafood, carpaccio, and neapolitan pizza.
Bonus: Warhorse Investments and Eleanor’s
Speakeasies are that more fun if the secret entrance is unique. Located at the back of Muss & Turner’s, you must walk through the freezer door to gain access to Eleanor’s. Once in settle for a cocktail or a bite to eat–from the full menu.
Honestly if you gain access to the Warhorse Investment, invite me! This is a members/invite only spot and not open to the public. Super secret, huh? But here’s the thing we’ve heard about it. It’s in the same building as the Local Three and also from the Muss & Turner team but even more exclusive and high-end than Eleanor’s.
With all these Secret Bars and Speakeasies reservations are suggested. They all offer a great time with elegance. Have fun!!
