This summer before going on an amazing cruise in Miami, I was able to visit the prodigious Vizcaya Museum & Gardens. It was a raining day when we visited Vizcaya Museum & Gardens, but that did not stop us from exploring as much as possible. This place is quite charming and if you are interested in being transformed to another country it is a must visit. I will hopefully be able to visit again on my next trip to Miami. You know without the rain.
Built as a winter estate for businessman James Deering. Yes, the James Deering of the Deering McCormick-International Harvester fortune. Vizcaya Museum & Gardens is located right on Biscayne Bay. And it once had a port entrance, that you could use to enter the estate. Known originally as the Villa Vizcaya, the estate was beautifully crafted and the gardens are immaculate. There’s an indoor pool and a grand courtyard. Although the courtyard has since been closed in.
The villa architecture was influenced by the Italian Renaissance-inspired Mediterranean Revival. Each interior room seem so be inspired by different architectural elements with European, Asian, and American furnishings, and art and antiquities. The numerous sculptures in the gardens and villa are of ancient Greek, Greco-Roman, and Italian Renaissance origins and styles.
The Vizcaya Museum & Gardens is self guided. You are able to listen to a guide using an app on your phone. Don’t forget to visit the museum store and cafe. Located near the pool and both can easily be over looked.
